History buffs in Festus, your city is calling.

With a new, $2 million library poised to open this fall and serve as a centerpiece for Main Street, library officials are putting out the call for historical photos, documents and other items to furnish the library's expanded genealogy room.

"We're looking for pictures of Festus and the surrounding area, announcements, family histories and yearbooks," said Lolly Gray, library director.Plans for the room also call for local newspaper archives on microfilm, scrapbooks and computer databases to help curious residents track down their family lineage.

"It's going to be much bigger and a better way to display what we have," Gray said.

The new building is double the size of the existing library and will offer modern amenities and vastly expanded parking.

Those interested in donating items can drop them off at the Festus Library on North Mill Street where the items will be catalogued and archived.

Along with historical items, the city's library foundation is still seeking something else-charitable donations.

The foundation set a goal of raising $100,000 to help defray building costs and has reached the $60,000 mark.

Gray said she and the rest of the library staff are gearing up for an exciting opening, possibly as soon as September.

"We are absolutely excited," she said. "We'll have more room and a level parking lot."
