HILLSBORO: Improvements planned for B, Business 21
A federal grant issued via the East West Gateway Council of Governments has already been approved to beautify Main Street and Vreeland Avenue and approval of the same type project for Maple Street is pending, said City Manager Gery Marmaduke. Monday night, the Hillsboro Board of Aldermen agreed to apply for another federal grant through the Surface Transportation Program to make improvements along Business Route 21 from Route B to Maple Street. If the grant for Business 21 is approved, Marmaduke said it could include adding a third lane from Route B to Maple and improving the Maple/Route 21 intersection to promote safety. The Main Street/Vreeland Avenue project, which Marmaduke said would begin in June 2009, will include new sidewalks, decorative street lighting, asphalt resurfacing, curb and guttering, storm sewers, street furniture, bicycle lanes and landscaping. The Maple Street project, which is slated for June 2010, will include decorative street lighting, resurfacing, new sidewalks and storm water work. The cost of the Route 21 project is estimated around $998,000; the Main Street/Vreeland Avenue project is estimated to cost around $681,300; and the Maple Street project running just shy of $300,000. The city must match 20 percent of each grant. In other business, the board voted 5-0 with three absent to budget an additional $78,240 from the water/sewer fund to make improvements to the city's waste treatment plant. The board had already approved around $98,000 to upgrade the two sand filters that were installed around 1975. Hillsboro Superintendent of Public Works Cody Pardieck said the city recently had the facility inspected and discovered the plant's underneath drainage system would also need to be replaced. |
