Jefferson County girls golf capsules
Roster: Seniors - Julia Heilich, Valerie Dohm; juniors - Amber Wolf, Cassie Paschang; sophomores - Jara Olsen, Nicole Zastrow, Kayla Ninh; freshmen - Devon Benck. Outlook: Experience is scarce, but new coach Jeremy Donald is encouraged for this season - and beyond. "My goal this year was to get numbers," he said. "We want to have a varsity and a J.V. next year." J.V. matches could come sooner than 2010; depending on how many newcomers sign on for golf now that classes have started, Donald said he might see about lining up a couple J.V. matches this fall. Donald expects the Warriors will be paced by Wolf, Heilich and Olson, three athletes who have impressed in preseason play.NORTHWEST LIONS Roster: Senior - Heather Hollingshead; junior - Ashelly Signorino; sophomores - Ashley May, Kelly Fanter; freshmen - Samantha Bloom, Lexie Morris. Outlook: The Lions have something neither of the other Jefferson County girls golf teams has - a state qualifier. Heather Hollingshead got her game in high gear last fall when, following a strong summer season of play in the Jefferson County Junior Golf program, she earned all-Suburban West honors and was the first area player to advance to the state golf championship since Alisha Burgert in 2004. Hollingshead is coming off another nice summer of JCJG play, and first-year Coach Corey Choate says the senior looks sharp. "She hits it phenomonally," he said. SECKMAN JAGUARS Roster: Seniors - Karalyn Skinner, Megan Kraus, Emily O'Donnell, Rachel West; Sophomores - Katie Ploesser, Clair Unkraut; freshmen - Brooke Stochl; Destiny Scott; Taylor Niedergerke. Outlook: The Jaguars got a slight jump on the rest of the Jefferson County golfing field when they pulled in nine players during the first week of practice. Skinner and Kraus return from last year's team, and West is coming off a solid summer season of junior golf play. New Coach Jessica Kennedy isn't making predictions for the Jaguars, but she is encouraged by the team's commitment. "A lot of them are taking lessons," she said. |
